Halliwell Shoes was established in 1958 when Mum & Dad brought Franklin Shoes from Mr & Mrs Loughrin, just up the road from the Pukekohe Hotel. We moved to our current premises which we own in 1965. Very much a family business with Mum(Gwen Halliwell) having worked for Equity Shoes in Queen Street Auckland being the catalyst while Father(Bert Halliwell) was the accountant and pragmatist that kept everything on a level keel. In the early days we were a family shoe store, over the years there was a fall off in people wanting good quality childrens shoes as cheaper Asian product became more readily available which lead us to go out of childrens shoes in the mid 80's - today we stock only womens and mens.
I(Richard Halliwell) joined the business in 1968 and took over from Mum when she passed away in 1975, doing the buying and running of the store with Father continuing doing the accountancy work and pragmatist, which I badly needed.
Over the years we have endeavored to keep up with market demands and changing times, venturing into Papakura for a while, opening Self Service Shoes to cater for the increasing array of synthetic product and eventually in 1989 open the first of the Eyecatcher Stores in Royal Oak Auckland. To-day there are four Eyecatcher stores Meadowbank, Howick, Hamilton and the latest opened in July of this year Thames giving us 5 stores to service.
Our daughter Cristina joined us in the mid 90's and to-day is in charge of all 5 stores.
We continue to endeavor to meet the ever changing market trends and demands by Cristina visiting the shoe fairs of Europe at least once a year to study the market and trends that are happening there. This enables us to build a collection that we believe will appeal to our customers, which is often a little different from other footwear stores. This is our unique quality.
